Carson soon reached the level of First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. On one mission, Carson’s squadron attacked the supply ports of Sousse and Sfax using “Flying Fortresses”, Boeing B-17 bomber planes. They destroyed 15 planes – 9 Junkers 88’s, 4 Messerschmitt-109’s, and 2 Fockewulf-190’s. Later, he was awarded Two Oak Leaf Clusters to Air Medal for destroying a Nazi bomber over Tunisia, but also received a citation for the same event.
The Neshoba Democrat commented on Carson’s actions in the war a few times. The newspaper stated things such as “good work of downing the Axis,” and “Carson W. Bounds in shooting down a Nazi dive bomber.”
